Dear Class of 2019 Pt. 1

So Monday is my first day of school and I'm so excited and nervous at the same time. But more so nervous because being a freshman, well sometimes you just don't know what to expect, so I asked different people going into high school some questions they had about high school and things they wanted to know, and then I teamed with 6 different bloggers, asking each the same questions, giving you real answers, so you can know what to expect your freshman year. I will be breaking this done into 3 parts, so the post isn't extremely long. So here's part 1.
Carly from The College Prepster

How do I approach the fear of public speaking?
Practice! The more you speak publicly, the easier it gets every time.

The schools says I'll have 2-3 hours of homework is that true?
I say that's pretty typical! I would make it your routine to do your homework right when you get home so you're not up late.

Will Google really be my best friend?
Maybe! I'd try to do your research in textbooks and from class notes. Google can be helpful, but you don't want it to turn into a crutch.

How do you balance extra curricular and academics?
I did crew, yearbook, and chorus in a big way and a few smaller clubs here and there. I loved everything I did so I always found time for it!

Do I really need a ton of school supplies?
Your teachers will let you know what you need.

Is it true that all athletes are players?
I think that's a stereotype.

How do I find my own crowd?
You'll figure out who you "click" with!

What should I wear to football games?
Something in school colors!

Is it true high school will be filled with the most drama ever?
Only if you make it filled with drama! Surround yourself with good people and you won't have any problems. If you don't want to be a part of the drama, you don't have to.

What do you consider the 'High School Experience'?
I think a big part of it is finding your independence, pushing yourself academically, and having safe fun with friends.

If an upperclassman hangs with me, do they really like me, or are they messing with me?
Depends, use your judgement! I had a handful of friends who were older! We were in chorus and yearbook together.

Does high school parties really look like the ones in movies?
Probably not.

Are you able to go to homecoming each year?
Depends on your school!

What was high school like for you?
It was really fun and also a little stressful. I took academics really seriously! But I'm glad I participated in chorus and yearbook electives. They are my favorite memories from high school!

How do I approach the fear of public speaking?
- Public speaking skills come with practice. It can be very scary at first, I’m not gonna lie, but the more you do it, the more natural it will come. I would say run for different student government positions at school and join a Debate Team or Mock Trial team! I ran for as many positions as were available to me just to get the practice of giving speeches and I was a part of my school’s Mock Trial Team. I really feel that both of these contributed to strengthening my public speaking.
The school says I'll have 2-3 hours of homework, is that true?
- Homework hours really vary depending on the classes you take and how much you’re willing to put into your schoolwork. My school said we had a minimum of three hours, but some days I was done in one hour and others I would work for six or more when my friends only spent two. When you have a test coming up, the hours increase because you most likely will be studying for the test on top of homework for that class and other classes. I generally never had more than three tests in a day, but that was a little bit brutal. If you end up taking AP or Honors classes as an upperclassman, then you will definitely have a more intense homework load because those classes are just more demanding, but it really is what you make of it.

Will google really be my best friend?
- Google was really helpful with homework because you can pretty much find the answer to any worksheet or textbook question by literally just typing it into your browser.

How do you balance extra curricular and academics?
- Balancing extra curriculars and academics is definitely a challenge sometimes, but the key to doing it is finding what your passions are and following them. It is better to be deeply involved in two or three extra curriculars than to spread yourself thin across every club your school offers. Colleges also prefer this too, so it will really help you in the long run. If you don’t like the idea of being class president, don’t do it just because you think it will “look good,” because at the end of the day it won’t matter unless it meant something to you. I participated in Mock Trial, started and was President of my school’s Fashion Club, and maintained my blog. At the end of the day college counselors appreciated that I followed my passions instead of trying to be the “prefect college candidate.”

Do I really need a ton of school supplies?
- The amount of school supplies you need really varies on how you plan to keep yourself organized. I liked to have a 1” or 1.5"  binder for each class, one or two notebooks, plenty of loose leaf paper, and a pencil case full of black and colored pens.

Is it true that all athletics are players?
- It isn’t true at all schools that all athletes are players, but it really depends on the size of the school. If you go to a really big school then not every athlete will play, but if you go to a smaller school then the coach will generally try his/her best to give each player at least a little bit of time.

How do I find my own crowd?
- Finding your own crowd takes time. My advice is to be open to everyone because the people you think you have the most in common with may not be the best people to be friends with. Also, don’t be shocked or sad if your friend group changes from heart to year, I went through three friend groups before I found my best friends and it’s kind of a funny joke between us because I am so different from all of them, but I couldn’t imagine having any other friends.

What do I wear to football games?
- My school didn’t have a football team, so I can’t speak from experience, but whenever I went to a football game at the nearby all boys-school I would either wear a sweatshirt for that school with jeans and sandals, or I’d wear a tee-shirt in the school colors with shorts or jeans.

Is it true high school will be filled with the most drama ever?
- High school is filled with petty drama, but the drama at my school was pretty mellow since we were all girls. You’d think it would be worse, but you’d be shocked at how much the drama decreases when you remove boys from the equation.

What would you consider the 'High School Experience'?
- The High School Experience is different for everyone. I consider the High School Experience making memories you won’t forget with really good friends.

If an upperclassman hangs with me, do they really like me, or are they messing with me?
- I can’t really predict whether an upperclassman likes you or is messing with you, but I had friends who were upperclassmen and I’d like to think the really did like me!

Does high school parties really look like the ones in the movies?
- Honestly I’ve never been to a “high school party.” I went to after-parties after my prom and my friend’s prom senior year, but those were really just like a group of my friends all getting together with like 20 people. I personally wasn’t big on partying because to me high school was mostly about getting good grades and getting myself into college.

Are you able to go to homecoming each year?
- My school didn’t have a homecoming, but I’m pretty sure most schools let you go to homecoming every year.

What was high school like for you?
- Overall my high school experience was great! My senior year was by far my favorite year and I made the best friends and the most memories. Even though senior year was super demanding between academics and college apps, I had more fun that year than any other year by far
Til part 2!
